Located on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, the Tenement Museum highlights the stories of immigrants seeking an escape from famine and government control. They expanded diversity and introduced new traditions to America, which soon became “The Melting Pot” of several cultures. What was once housing for thousands of immigrants seeking freedom and employment is now a landmark building and museum. The dedication of these hardworking immigrants resonates with all Americans, symbolizing that dreams really can become reality. Their stories of hardship and endurance have contributed to the overall identity of America.

There are three ways in which you can experience the wonders of this museum. The first is by touring the actual building located on 103rd Orchard Street. The second is to meet the residents (played by costume interpreters) who once lived there. The third option is to walk through the neighborhood itself; viewers can see first hand how immigrants made the new-found place home.

“They faced challenges we understand today: making a new life, working for a better future, starting a family with limited means.” (www.tenement.org)
