City Island
City Island, an island off of Pelham Bay Park, is one of the Bronx's many hidden gems. It is a bit of a ride to get there, but it is definitely worth the trip. The only way to access the island is by walking or taking a bus, but the bus was easy to catch.
With a population just exceeding 4,000, City Island is a breathtaking harbor town that is 1.5 miles wide by .5 miles. The island was originally inhabited by a band of Lenape Native Americans, but it was eventually settled by European immigrants.
The name "City" Island reflects the hope of some of its early settlers that someday it would be a city, but the island remained a harbor town. Today the island retains its old unique identity of being a fishing town and every detail pays tribute to this identity. From fish shaped parking signs to rows of delicious seafood restaurants, this sleepy little town feels like something worthy of a postcard cover.
I absolutely loved City Island. It had a very chill and relaxed atmosphere and there were surprisingly few tourists. I don't think most people know about City Island which makes it a great location to get away from the crowds of New York and kick your feet up with the locals. The Island also has the creepiest little general store I have ever seen and that alone could get me to go back. Honestly, I don't think they've changed the window displays in 50 years.
Whether its for a fancy fish fillet or just to pick up some souvenirs from the general store, I hope you get the chance to pop over at City Island and I promise that you won't regret your trip.
