If you're a concert fanatic, then a visit to Webster Hall in East Village is a must. Webster Hall is a concert and nightclub venue. They host concerts for some well known artists but mainly smaller acts. It is "one of North America's most prestigious and historic entertainment venues operating continuously as a performance hall and nightclub since 1886."
Within the Webster Hall vicinity, are three separate performance halls. The Grand Ballroom has a 1500 person capacity, the Marlin Room has a 600 person capacity, and The Studio has a 400 person capacity.
Price Range: typically between $20 - $60
To get there, all you have to do is take a 4, 5, or 6 on the subway downtown and get off at the Union Square stop, then walk about 0.3 miles and you have made it to Webster Hall.
Personally, I've had the chance of going to two concerts at Webster Hall during our stay in the city. One was in the The Grand Ballroom and the other in the Marlin Room performance hall. The Grand Ballroom was definitely much larger than the Marlin Room, but both were never crowded enough that you couldn't make it to the front of the stage to be up close to the artists performing.
Here are some pictures from our experience at the LANY concert:
