Staten Island Ferry

An activity that all too easily flies under the radar, the Staten Island Ferry is a great group activity that shouldn't be missed.

Running 24/7, the ferry is a fun, free, all-hours activity. Giving passengers a stellar view of the Manhattan, Brooklyn, and New Jersey skyline, as well as the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, it's worth visiting twice - once at night and once during the day. However, because of it's free and 24 hour nature, the ferry acts as a haven for the homeless at night.

The only way to get from Staten Island to Manhattan without a car, the Staten Island Ferry is an echo of the time that ferries were the go-to way of moving between Manhattan and the other burrows before many of the bridges were built. The 5-mile boat ride takes about 30 minutes one-way, and ferries come every 30-minutes (sometimes a shorter wait, but not longer). So give yourself at least an hour-and-a-half for the trip to Staten Island and back.

VISTORS TIPS: Free wifi is available in both the ferry stations and on the ferries themselves. Best views are from the lower, outside decks of the boat. If you have a DSLR, bring both a wide-angle and telephoto lens to capture great photos of both the skyline and other boats on the water. Bring a jacket, it gets chilly.
