Located in the heart of the Financial District, the original Federal Hall was built as New York City Hall, and with the establishment of the new republic under the Constitution, it became the first capitol building. In 1812, it fell victim to the war and was destroyed. The building you visit now is called Federal Hall National Memorial and was built in 1842.
Throughout its life, Federal Hall has served many purposes. From city offices, to customs house, treasury building, and now, national monument. It is managed by the Federal Parks Service and houses displays showcasing not only the building's history, but art displays as well.
Outside of the building is a large statue of George Washington, who was inaugurated at this location. From behind, with his arms outstretched, he appears as a watchful guardian of the city.
