Tompkins Square Park of East Village was acquired in 1834, after plans to build a market for the community failed. The park was named in honor of the deceased governor of New York, Daniel D. Tompkins who was governor from 1807 to 1817. Originally, it was a swampland. Finally, in 1878 Tompkins Square was designated a public park.

There are plenty of benches and open fields throughout the park to have a nice sit and eat, read the newspaper, get your tan on, or or talk with a friend.

There is also a small gated dog park for dog owners to bring their dogs outside to play. It is well kept and clean and the dogs that we saw were all friendly and playful with one another.

We also found a ping pong table in the park. So for any of you ping pong lovers, Tompkins Square Park is the perfect spot to play. It's has tons of shaded areas as well as some great patches where the sun hits throughout the park.
