About the New York City Field Experience

The New York City Field Experience runs during Brigham Young University's spring term (late-April through mid-June).

The program was approved by Brigham Young University in 2015. Hosted by the BYU Kennedy Center and sponsored by the BYU School of Communications, the program is open to all BYU students.

New York City is the nation’s media capital, with a rich and diverse history in journalism, advertising, and public relations.

In 2016, students will take two Communications courses while living in New York City: Comms 301, Media History; and Comms 328, Backpack Journalism.

Expected learning outcomes for these classes are:

  1. Students will experience the diversity of the nation's media capital and learn of the city’s media history, studying the newspapers produced by journalists from various racial and ethnic backgrounds, and examining original historical documents.

  2. Students will also learn to tell stories about the city and its people, using their smart phones and laptops to distribute text, photos, and video on the web and social media platforms.
