Assignment: NYC episode 4
"Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses," wrote Emma Lazarus. The words are written on the Statue of Liberty, which is finished in this episode. Those immigrants pass through a newly-constructed facility on Ellis Island.
Moving film captures New York life at the end of the 19th century. Skyscrapers—including the mammoth Pulitzer Building on Park Row—rise into the sky. Immigrants continue to converge on the city. As the new century dawns, the Subway is built and, so are Penn Station and Grand Central ('built for all time,' it was said of Penn Station).
The city experiences widespread labor strife before the deadliest industrial accident in the city's history, 146 garment workers—mostly women—die at the Triangle Shirt Waist Factory.
