Multimedia examples

There are plenty of examples of multimedia journalism. Here are some examples we looked at in class. They are from across the country and a few were homegrown at BYU.

"Alone on the Hill" was done in 2015 by the Arizona Republic. It features photos and maps. Unfortunately, it also has Flash elements.

BYU students went to Chile in 2015 to produce "Breaking the Class Ceiling." It similarly features the parallax visual effect and also includes video.

A more recent Universe Narratives project was done in 2015 in Chile, "Engineering a Way to Conserve the Culture of Peru's Uros Islands."

Last year Morgan State University partnered with West Virginia to produce "Bridging Selma."

Many such multimedia projects took inspiration from a famous New York Times project, "Snow Fall."

Although Snow Fall drew plenty of critical acclaim, the project was expensive and time consuming. The Times is not likely to rely on such huge projects but, in its 2014 Innovation Report, the newspaper noted the benefit of developing staff members who are capable of producing Snow Fall-like projects. You can see the project's influence in smaller packages like this one:

The New York Times started the new year by reviewing the Obama Era, which provides us an example of how the newspaper is handling a news series:
