Mobile phone camera cage

Ever since DSLRs emerged as a viable video platform, we've seen the creation of a cottage industry that produces camera cages. The cages have cold shoes and three-quarter mounts to allow videographers to attach various peripheral equipment, such as lens, lights, and audio accessors. This was especially important for cameras like the Canon 5d, given its difficulties with audio.

Now that smart phones have decent cameras, we're seeing an increasing number of cages for iPhones and Android phones. A few years ago, I purchased a rig called the Owle to use with an iPhone 4. It had a lens, a mic, a cold shoe, and four quarter-inch mounts. But, as Apple released new versions, it kept changing the size of the iPhone. The Owle was obsolete the moment I got an iPhone 5.

Luckily, there's a new cage out that will work with multiple smart phones. It's called the Beastgrip and it sells for about $140, or $165 with a lens, which isn't bad when you consider you'll be able to use it with your future phones and use various lens (who said photography is cheap?).
